When your favourite niece requests a pencil case…

Written by , Posted in Back To School, handmade, Pencil Case, Pouches, sewing

…you create one just for her.
Throughout August, I received many requests for the three-ring binder pencil case. Being the crazy summer it has been, there were weeks, yes weeks, when I simply did not have time to enter my studio. I checked in once in a while but did not even think about heating up the iron or turning on the sewing machine. When life is functioning at normal capacity, my machines are turned on every single day. It felt a bit weird not being in the studio every day but it is what it is. Life is slowing returning to the pace I prefer. When my sister asked me if I could create a pencil case for my all-time favourite niece, I made the time to get into the studio.
Of course, if I was going to create one pencil case, I would create ten.

My niece loves the colour purple. If I picture her, I see purple as she is usually wearing some shade of purple. She also requested an additional pocket to hold special erasers and usb sticks.

I made a few more adding the extra pocket.

Although it obviously takes more time to make a case than to run to the Dollar Store to purchase a very inexpensive one. We did the ‘pencil case test’ over the last school year and my daughters case, after a school year of constant use, remained perfectly intact, albeit a bit dirty. I posted the post school year pic of the case here.

Our test this year will be to see if the pencil case can make it through a second school year.
All ‘ready to ship’ pencil cases are listed in my shop. If you would prefer a custom fabric for the case, send me a message. Most times, I have the preferred fabrics available.
Thanks for stoppin’ by and hope you have a fabulous day!

Little Laptop Sleeve

Written by , Posted in Back To School, halloween, iPad sleeve

My daughter, as part of a high school academic program, received a Chrome Book to use and keep for the school year. She was pretty excited about 1. having her own little computer and 2. a computer which isn’t a Mac, iPad or iPhone. Being that we are a Apple products kind of family, there are a lot of programs etc. we can’t access using our Mac. It’s never really bothered me but it seems the school based programs tend to be accessed better by a Windows based operating system.
Being that Rylee is only ‘borrowing’ the cute, little laptop for the school year, she asked if I could make her a sleeve to protect the laptop. Of course, I obliged. I asked her to select fabrics and she picked one that I worked with a lot last year, ‘The Ghastlies’ Collection. How she ever remembered this collection, I don’t quite understand as I have stored the collection in a ‘seasonal fabrics’ bin which isn’t even visible in my studio. I did suggest other fabrics but she was pretty set on the ‘The Ghastlies’. I have to admit they are cute but thought ‘Botanics’ by Carolyn Friedlander or ‘Sun Print’ by Alison Glass would have been a great choice also.

In the original version, I have made little handles so that she could easily pull the sleeve from her back pack but apparently, the handles made it look ‘babyish’ and she said she would not use them. Thus, this morning, I took it apart and removed the handles (which I thought were really cute but I am not in Grade 9 right!)
There was a time when Rylee wasn’t interested in any of my sewing creations. Now, she is asking for pencil cases, sleeves and quilts. I don’t know what has changed but I’m definitely loving it and not going to question why the change in interest 🙂
Hope you are having a fabulous weekend and thanks for stoppin’ by!

She wanted a new pencil case…

…and we again could not find one she liked at a retail store. Rylee isn’t that particular about new school supplies. She knows we recycle what was still functional from the previous school year before we purchase ‘new’ but she really wanted a pencil case. So, I made her a few.

Rylee selected the fabrics for ‘her’ pencil cases and I think she made great choices as they turned out great.
Here are a few more I have created and are listed in my Etsy Shop.

With the amount of stitching and reinforcements added to these cases, they should last the entire school year!

If you are viewing the cases on Etsy, you will see the US Exchange Rate conversion. If you are shopping and shipping within Canada, the price of the pencil case is $18 CAD.
After I have spent time creating ‘little projects’, I seem to have the need to create a larger project. So on to a queen sized quilt!
Modern Vintage Quilt
Created using mainly Bonnie and Camille ‘Miss Kate’ fabrics and using the Bonnie and Camille ‘Modern Vintage’ pattern. Lots of half square triangles which means this one is gonna take a while 🙂
Thanks for stoppin’ by and hope you have a fabulous day!

The Pencil Case ‘Test’ and a Give-A-Way

Written by , Posted in Back To School, Give-A-Way

The end of remaining in pj’s until 11:00 am is nearing. This time next week, we will be in full swing of the typical school day and extra-curricular activities for many, many long months. This time of the year also means preparing the kidlets for school both mentally and in terms of school supplies. Last year was the first year my daughter required a 3 ring binder pencil case. We purchased what appeared to be a well-made case and within a few months, we needed to replace it. We repeated this process at least three times last year so this year, I thought I would try to make a pencil case which will stand up to the ‘test’ of durability.
Pencil Case
I copied the size from an existing ‘dollar store’ pencil case…
P1060940
The one from the dollar store was not lined but it did have some top stitching. I created the pencil cases using heavy weight interfacing on both the lining (yes, they are all lined!!) and the outer fabric. I also top-stitched seams and reinforced all stress areas. The goal is to see if this handmade pencil case will last the entire school year.

The fabric selection for this pencil case is from the collection Elementary by Moda Fabrics.
I also created a few floral versions…

…and I created one for a Give-A-Way!!! I realized it was high time for a give-a-way considering I can’t remember the last time I did!
This is the pencil case you could win!
