The ‘Mini’ Sew Together Bag

Written by , Posted in Sew Together Bag

Which really isn’t so mini!
After I sewed a bunch of the original Sew Together Bags and posted the results here, I received a sweet note from Elizabeth of Occasional Piece (www.occasionalpiece.com), asking if I knew she had created a pattern for a mini version of the original Sew Together Bag pattern created by Sew Demented.

I needed to make a few gifts and didn’t want to make a standard zip pouch and throw a gift card of some sort in it.  I needed to make ‘Thank-you-for-always-driving-me-when-it-snows-because-I-am-too-chicken-to-drive-in-snow’ gifts and a few  birthday gifts.  The mini version fit the bill and I am ever so grateful Elizabeth introduced me to the mini version. Firstly, it takes less fabric and even though I can easily say each bag takes at least four hours to complete, that is probably two hours less than the original, larger version takes to complete.  The original Sew Together Bag measures 10″ x 5″ x 5″ and the mini version measures 8″ x 4″ x 5″.   I still love the original version but also like the idea the mini can fit in my purse.

The mini hosts two inside pockets inside of three. Having made both now, I would probably use the larger version for toting creating tools (I don’t like the work ‘craft’ so I like to say ‘creating tools’ as opposed to ‘crafting tools’). The larger version is also better for travelling. I would use it to store the meds. On that note, I would probably take two Sew Together Bags with me on my travels considering I take half a pharmacy with me. You know, just in case…

The above bags were made using the ‘Paint’ fabric collection by Such Fabrics for Windham Fabrics.  I fell in love with this collection when I first saw it but didn’t realize at the time how great they worked in creating the Sew Together Bags.  Sew Together Bag

I love the lining in this one…Sew Together BagElizabeth received permission from Michelle, the original author of the Sew Together Bag pattern, to post the measurements and tutorial for the mini version but on the condition you own the original pattern.  So, with the original pattern measurements in hand, you have to do a little math to work out the dimensions of the mini version. In this way, no one is ‘stealing’ anything from anyone which I totally respect.

If you want to make a Sew Together Bag, you can purchase the original pattern here and if you want to make the mini version after having purchased the original, you can find the instructions and worksheet here.

I love that I have many available for sweet nothing gifts and weird gifts like the ‘Thank-you-for-always-driving-me-when-it-snows-because-I-am-too-chicken-to-drive-in-snow’ gifts 🙂

Thank you so much for stoppin’ by and hope you are having a fabulous day!

The Sew Together Bag

Sew Together Bag
I purchased the Sew Together Bag pattern to create the ‘Sew Together’ Bag written by Sew Demented about a year ago after a customer via Etsy asked if I could create a multi pocket bag to help organize her medicine. I googled to find a pattern for a multi pocket pouch and found the ‘Sew Together’ Bag pattern. Being that the pattern is copyrighted, I contacted the author of the pattern, Michelle Tucker, and requested permission to sell the completed bag. I was granted permission at that time, but for whatever reason I never ended up even opening the pattern let alone begin to create it. This pattern was filed with with the other patterns on my ‘to do’ list until last week. I was kind of intimidated by the pattern. I had read and heard the bag was difficult or complicated to make so that made it so much easier to put on the back burner of things to make. I had heard many went through lots of sewing machine needles attempting to make this bag but unless I did something wrong, which I don’t think I did, the bag construction wasn’t difficult at all. My test for whether I did follow the pattern correctly would be to test if it works and it sure does.

The pattern and bag appears to be designed to hold sewing essentials such as scissors, thread snips, etc. for those who sew at retreats or get togethers. I don’t sew outside of my studio so for me, the bag was designed more for carrying essentials while travelling. It’s the perfect size to hold cosmetics, medicine, toiletries and other vacation essentials. The three zippered pockets plus the space between the pockets keeps everything neat and organized, perfect for those who have organization issues 🙂

The true test though for whether something I create is a hit is if my thirteen year old daughter likes it or more importantly, wants one. She really wanted one of the these bags so I made her one using the Figures Collection by Brigitte Heiland for Zen Chic for Moda.

Dear daughter is pleased and now has a ‘cool’ travel bag for her outings.
These bags will be listed in my Etsy shop soon but in the meantime, if you are interested in purchasing one, simply send me an email rosa@gabryroad.com.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you have a fabulous day!
