Rec Room: Updated!

Written by , Posted in Just another day...

The rec room or TV room was the first room we ‘updated’ when we moved into this house back in 2006. We had only one TV and it was the place we all hung out in. And we did comfortably for years until one day at the beginning of August, hubby said ‘Let’s get rid of the carpet’. I believe within seconds I was on my way out the door to the nearest flooring store.
The old rec room wasn’t bad but we had probably outgrown the carpet and the colours. Like most reno’s, once we figured out we were replacing the carpet in the rec room, of course we would have to replace the flooring in the adjoining rooms or it was look like, as I described, floor vomit.
So this is the old version of the rec room:

And this is what it looked like after the flooring and painting:

I painted the toy bucket the same colour as the top part of the walls (Benjamin Moore ‘Arctic Ice’) which is a pale grey.
I left everything as is until I decided something was missing from the room.
I figured it out about a week after the renos were done.
I was missing the colour teal.
There is some element of teal in almost every room in the house so why should the rec room be any different right?
I painted the media cabinet using, for the very first time, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint purchased at Malenka Originals right here in Ottawa.
Then this happened:
TV Room
Yes, much better 🙂
Without much natural lighting, the colours do not appear as great in pics as in real life but you get the gist. I have teal in the room so I am happy.
I went on to make some pillow covers to co-ordinate. This is the first time I have sewed ‘chevrons’ and wow it was great. I am, maybe a bit behind the current trends, but in love with chevrons and zig zags 🙂

The room still needs a few more pillow covers but I am busy stocking up my shop now so that project will have to wait a bit. Feels so great to be out of paint and reno mode. I truly missed my morning sewing sessions when I had to paint instead. There was a time when I loved to paint and remodel, etc. but now, all that is done on an ‘on need’ basis. On that note, hoping we don’t have any ‘need to do’ renos for a long time!
Thanks for stoppin’ by and hope you have a fabulous day!

The Pencil Case ‘Test’ and a Give-A-Way

Written by , Posted in Back To School, Give-A-Way

The end of remaining in pj’s until 11:00 am is nearing. This time next week, we will be in full swing of the typical school day and extra-curricular activities for many, many long months. This time of the year also means preparing the kidlets for school both mentally and in terms of school supplies. Last year was the first year my daughter required a 3 ring binder pencil case. We purchased what appeared to be a well-made case and within a few months, we needed to replace it. We repeated this process at least three times last year so this year, I thought I would try to make a pencil case which will stand up to the ‘test’ of durability.
Pencil Case
I copied the size from an existing ‘dollar store’ pencil case…

The one from the dollar store was not lined but it did have some top stitching. I created the pencil cases using heavy weight interfacing on both the lining (yes, they are all lined!!) and the outer fabric. I also top-stitched seams and reinforced all stress areas. The goal is to see if this handmade pencil case will last the entire school year.

The fabric selection for this pencil case is from the collection Elementary by Moda Fabrics.
I also created a few floral versions…

…and I created one for a Give-A-Way!!! I realized it was high time for a give-a-way considering I can’t remember the last time I did!
This is the pencil case you could win!

To enter to win the pencil case, simply leave a comment telling me if you could go back to school, which program would you enrol in? Or if you are currently in school, which program are you enrolled in?
By random number generator, the winning comment will be selected bright and early on Wednesday, August 27.

Thanks for stoppin’ by and looking forward to reading your comments 🙂

A little bit of chaos…

Written by , Posted in Just another day...

So whereas I thought I would be sewing a whack of ‘back to school’ goodies for the shop, I am not.
Whenever my parents visit from Vancouver, we find a project my dad to work on while he is here. Like me, he doesn’t like to sit around or sight see too much. He would much rather immense himself in a project and keep busy.
So this year, and for my mom and dads upcoming visit, we decided to replace the carpeting in the rec room with laminate.
Sounds easy right? One room. Not too big. Small project?
Well, not so easy and not so small. Once we decided to replace the flooring in the rec room, we thought we might as well replace the flooring in the office and my studio as the three rooms lead into each other. Had we not decided to do this, if you stood in a certain place in the rec room where you can see all the rooms in one view, it would seriously have looked like floor vomit with the three different floorings.
Alas, chaos and mayhem as we now have to empty three rooms in a very limited space.
Here are some before pictures of the rec room…
Rec Room Reno

This is where were are at right now…
Rec Room Reno
We have had to move tons of ‘stuff’ upstairs so not only is my entire basement in disarray, but so is the main floor…

I am though, pretty excited about having new flooring in my studio which of course leads to other small renos. We are removing part of a wall which formed a closet which should grant me (and my wee bit of fabric) a bit more floor space and wall space.
Rec Room Reno
So yes all this is annoying the heck out of my OCD but in good news, I earned a 75 floors badge yesterday via my Fitbit.
Fit Bit
My goal is to one day climb as many floors as the CN Tower (147 floors) so yesterday, I basically climbed half of the CN Tower just by moving stuff upstairs and helping hubby with the flooring cuts. Did I tell you how much I love my FitBit. I do. I do. I do. My daughter has one also so we compete each day, along with other friends, to see who can get the most steps in one day. It’s fun and it gets me going when I really don’t want to, especially at the end of a long day.
With not being able to make it to the gym as often as I would like these days, it’s good to have a house with stairs 🙂
Hoping all the renos with be done in a few weeks and I will then be able to post the ‘after’ pics.
Thanks for stoppin’ by and hope you have a fabulous day!

HRT (Half Triangle Rectangle) Quilts

Written by , Posted in Quilt, Quilts

HRT Quilt
I just realized I have now made three quilts using the Bloc Loc Half Rectangle Triangle ruler and haven’t posted a hint of how much I love these rulers!
The rulers look like most rulers except there is a diagonal groove for your seams to rest on while you cut.
BlocLoc-HRT-200
The ruler sets come with a great chart advising what size to cut your rectangles based on what you want as a finished block size.
I cut hundreds (yes, I really mean hundreds) of 4.25″ x 8.5″ rectangles.

You then use any ruler to cut the rectangles diagonally. Flip the corresponding piece and sew along the long seam to create a half triangle rectangle.

This is when the fun part starts. The Bloc Loc ruler sits on the seam and allows you to cut perfect sized half triangle rectangles (HRT’s) without having to measure and re-measure to ensure all the blocks are the same size. I wanted a finished block measuring 3.25″ x 6.5″ so I just slid the top of the ruler to the 3.25″ mark and then turned the entire block around to cut the other side.

I know I haven’t done a great job at explaining how to use the ruler but there are great videos and instructions on the Bloc Loc site to show you better. Much better 🙂
I created enough blocks to create this oversized lap quilt…

The lap quilt was quilted by Silver Fox Quilting who did an amazing job of capturing the design this quilt needed to shine.

I still had tons of blocks remaining after completing the large quilt so, using the Bloc Loc Ruler, I made the blocks a wee bit smaller and created a few baby sized quilts.

Backing for all quilts is ‘Flutterflies’ from the Arcadia by Sarah Watson for Cloud 9 Fabric. I love this backing so much I bought the blue version also for future quilt backing.

These quilts and more are available in my Etsy Shop.

As the studio, and entire basement, gets new flooring, I will not be able to play in my happy place but I am looking forward to the reno results and creating in a fresh, new space. Well, it’s the same room and same studio but will just be a bit sweeter with new floors and fresh paint! And yes, for those who know me well, the reno chaos and mayhem is driving me and my OCD bonkers but its happening at a good time because the kids are home and we just find more things to do outside to avoid the mess 🙂

Thanks for stoppin’ by and hope you have a fabulous day!
